What is vacuum cupping?

A vacuum cup or vacuum nipple is an object that helps lift, lower, hold and move products. Commonly used as grippers in manual or automatic handling applications. A wide range of products can be protected and moved — everything from bottles and bags to bricks and wood panels, and sheet metal, pipes and glass windows. In essence, they are the interface between the vacuum system and the object.

Operating principle of this industrial vacuum cup

Technically, A vacuum cup does not self-attach and adhere to the surface of the product. Basically, when the suction cup comes into contact with the surface of the product, it activates a vacuum generator (such as a blower or pump) and sucks air from inside the cup out, creating a vacuum. Given that the air pressure inside is lower than the pressure outside the cup, the atmospheric pressure holds the workpiece against the cup. The greater the difference between the ambient pressure and the vacuum pressure inside the cup, the greater the holding force that presses the cup on the product.

When the object reaches its new location, the air supply to the vent is cut off and vacuum generation stops, which allows the object to release.

Ideally, the suction cup should rest on a smooth, non-porous surface. Then, when the vacuum is created, the rim of the cup completely seals and the air inside is quickly evacuated, resulting in a tight hold of the product. However, in reality, the material is often permeable, rough or uneven. In these cases, the cups cannot be completely sealed and outside air continuously enters the system. That's called a leaky system. Designers must compensate for system leaks by using high-flow vacuum generators or using smaller cups to reduce the possibility of leaks.

Common types of vacuum cups

  • Suction cups range from simple, round types to those designed for special applications such as handling candy, greasy metal sheets, or porous wood and cardboard.
  • Flat suction cups are suitable for handling products that have flat or slightly curved surfaces, such as metal and glass panels, plastic panels and wooden boards. Flat cups have quite a small internal volume, so they easily release steam quickly and can stick tightly for a short time. Because they have been designed for the best fit, they have good stability to handle high cutting forces and withstand the forces and accelerations from fast automatic processing movements.
  • On the other hand, vacuum cup having one or more helices allows compensation for different product heights and handling of parts with uneven surfaces.
  • There are two shapes including round and oval. The different sizes make them suitable for handling products ranging from small to large in weight. And they come in a variety of rubber and elastomer materials to suit specific application requirements, from FDA-compliant cups for food handling, abrasion-resistant materials for moving bricks to oil-resistant grades in metalworking operations.

Porous materials include cardboard, wood and Styrofoam, all of which require higher vacuum flows, but do not necessarily require high level vacuum to be lifted.
