Oil-Free Vacuum Pumps

Upgrading a plant with new vacuum pumps is always a priority. AVA understands this and always works to help customers choose vacuum pumps with the right capacity and capability. Today, join AVA in exploring the oil-free vacuum pump range.

1. What is an oil-free vacuum pump?

An oil-free vacuum pump, also called an oil-less or dry vacuum pump, is essentially a pump that uses no oil in the chamber to create vacuum or to cool the pump. In oil-lubricated machines, oil is used to seal the vacuum chamber and cool the pump. Oil-free machines use other means to cool the machine during operation, such as water or air cooling.

2.1: Claw vacuum pumps:

The dry Claw vacuum pump saves considerable energy and is highly efficient compared with traditional rotary blower designs without internal compression. It is used in fields such as petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and metallurgy.Elmo Rietschle

2.2: Screw vacuum pumps:

The S-VSI screw vacuum pump (sizes 100 and 300) represents today's advanced dry-running vacuum technology: not only extremely energy efficient and reliable, but also offering low lifecycle costs. It is used in many industrial applications such as drying and packaging.

3. Why should we choose an oil-free vacuum pump?

3.1 Energy saving:

Oil-free vacuum technology delivers significant savings in overall energy efficiency. An oil-free vacuum pump combined with a VSD (variable speed drive) can cut energy consumption by up to 50% in some applications compared with the equivalent oil-lubricated machines. The specific energy requirement, or SER, is the ratio of the pump's power draw (in watts) to its corresponding pumping speed (m³/h) at a given inlet pressure (mbar abs.). Put simply, it is how much energy is needed to move a given quantity of air from A to B. The compression principle of the oil-free vacuum pump can allow a substantial reduction in SER depending on the application requirements. Most oil-free technologies are VSD compatible, allowing more precise pumping and therefore lower energy consumption.

3.2 Less contamination:

If we have a process with strict requirements on low contamination risk, the oil-free vacuum pump offers an effective, dependable solution. These vacuum pumps have been developed specifically to meet the needs of manufacturers requiring the lowest possible contamination environment.

3.3 Low maintenance costs:

If we are looking to reduce maintenance costs, the oil-free vacuum pump is the ideal solution. These pumps do not require the level of servicing that oil-based machines do. There is no need to replace oil and oil separator elements, which is required regularly and naturally leads to higher running costs over the life of the machine.

3.4 Less downtime:

Unlike oil-lubricated machines, an oil-free vacuum pump does not have to be dismantled for servicing and maintenance. This means there is little or no equipment downtime, nor any knock-on effect from lost production time.

3.5 Environmentally friendly:

Oil-free vacuum pumps remove costs such as oil supply, waste oil disposal and labour. They also have the added benefit of reducing oil consumption in production processes, lowering the user's environmental impact from oil production and waste oil disposal.

3.6 Lower total cost of ownership:

All the above benefits show that the oil-free vacuum pump delivers an outstandingly low total cost of ownership (TCO) over the pump's working life. Reduced service and maintenance costs, combined with energy savings, lower the running cost per machine. Although the initial investment in an oil-lubricated solution may look better, in the long run the cost of ownership is far higher than that of a dry-running machine.
